For the 75th Anniversary of Saginaw Toastmasters Club 781, here are my thought of the day.

I don’t remember where I heard it first. But subsequently I started to think and see this maxim everywhere. It’s more than just chatting.

Since I heard that communication is the currency of success, I stopped to reflect, why?

Communication Is the Currency of Success is more than just talking and speaking. It's about connecting, understanding, and building relationships with other people.  In today's world, social connections are more important than ever; and communication with our connections is the true currency of success.

Why and how is communication so critically important?

First, Building Strong Relationships: Whether it's personal, intimate at home, or professional at work - relationships thrive on communication. Dialogues foster trust, understanding, empathy, and creating a solid emotional foundation for any successful relationship. Every interaction is a potential serendipity encounter.

Second, Effective Community: In any team, including the married couple with children, communication is crucial for achieving common marital goals. Communication ensures that everyone is on the same page.

Thirdly, in the Workplace: Communication is required for identifying and solving business problems. By openly discussing challenges and brainstorming for solutions, teams overcome obstacles and achieve better outcomes.

Fourth, Increased Productivity: Communication reduces confusion, and reduces errors. It streamlines workflow, leading to efficiency and higher productivity.

Last, Effective Leadership in all walks of life are excellent communicators.  Leaders clearly articulate their vision, inspire their teams, build constructive plans, and motivate the public.

How to Improve Communication Skills On a Personal Level

  • ·Develop a passion to be a skillful public speaker. It’s your joyful life we’re talking here.

Join a talkers-speakers club, like Toastmasters International. Attend public speaking training seminars, like the Dale Carnegie Course. Train yourself to talk with confidence.

The more we speak the more confident we become.

Seek out public speaking opportunities.  In fact any civic club like Rotary or your nearest chamber of commerce provides opportunities for public speaking. Learn to speak by watching speakers. Watch TEDx speakers on YouTube.

  • Listen Actively.  Be attentive to the words being spoken, to the speaker's body language and their tone of voice.

  • Clarity and Conciseness. Be clear and concise in your message. Avoid technical jargon and pompous words. Tell stories.  Use props and visuals.

  • Behave and Act Empathically. Empathy means to understand the other person's perspective and tailor your communication accordingly.

  • Seek Feedback.  On your communication skills and be open to constructive opportunities to for improvement.

My Take Home Message

Communication is a life tool.  Communication is the currency of success.

Today's world is interconnected.  Communication is critical for personal survival and success. It's the foundation for building strong relationships, fostering collaboration, and achieving goals in all areas of our lives. By honing my communication skills, We each release our full human potential and achieve my purpose in life.

I ask myself frequently:

  • What communication challenges did I face today?

  • How has effective communication helped me achieve my goals?
